Our Voices is a youth-led initiative that empowers newly arrived or refugee young people to create films that are meaningful and enables self-representation on matters of concern. Participants use the power of film to express themselves through the development and sharing of positive and constructive alternative narratives. The project has been funded by the state government of Victoria, as represented by the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
About Our Voices
Youthworx delivered the first of Our Voices programs in 2017 as a pilot. Our Voices 2017 was a year long cultural exchange media program culminating in the creation of short films by participants. Lead by core facilitator and film maker David MacKenzie, supported by film maker Rahil Hamasalih and project managed by Nicola Innes the program was a great success.
We employed 8 young people who had previously participated in our accredited training course and 22 other Youthworx staff and contractors were engaged in the project. There were 55 multicultural actors and/or crew involved in the films, many of whom were from Ethiopia, Somalia, Iran, Iraq, China, Burma, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Kenya.
